The Uruguay river is 1,142 miles long and flows in southern South America, originating in the coastal range of southern Brazil. Its main headstream is the Pelotas river that originates 40 miles from the Atlantic coast in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The river flows west through the coastal range of Brazil and then turns southwest, forming a border between Brazil and Argentina. Once beneath Monte Caseros, Argentina the river turns southward. Finally, once above Buenos Aires, Argentina the Uruguay River combines with the Paraná river and others to form Río de la Plata, the largest estuary in the world.
